Aaron Tinder is an artist and educator from central Iowa. He currently teaches in the Department of Art & Design at Grand View University in Des Moines. Aaron's work primarily stems from a practice of drawing, though he also utilizes paint, photography and found materials. A collage-based aesthetic is common to nearly everything he does, juxtaposing dissimilar elements to form compositions that seem simultaneously attractive and awkward. Often his drawings and collages deliberately combine fragments from sources that feel contradictory, forcing the viewer to find common ground among images that want to fight with each other. Themes of nostalgia, identity and compromise are all present in nearly everything, from mixed media abstractions to intricate pencil drawings.
Aaron's background includes a BA in Art Education from Simpson College and an MFA in Painting & Drawing from Northern Illinois University. His work has been featured in the International Drawing Annual published by Manifest Gallery in Ohio, the Quad-State Juried Exhibition at the Quincy Art Center in Illinois, and in a variety of galleries and exhibits around Iowa and the Midwest.
