Teaching Argumentative Writing to First-Year Students
Teaching first-year students how to write poses special challenges. Students come to Simpson with a wide variety of backgrounds in writing, and many struggle with the primary focus of argumentative writing: formulating and defending a thesis. In this session, Beth Beggs will provide suggestions for best ways to work with first-year writers, particularly in the SC 101 setting, which requires a focus on thesis-driven writing. Participants will learn strategies for designing assignments and providing students with helpful and encouraging feedback.
Faculty Development is again offering a series of workshops during Iowa Private College Week. The sessions are offered so they will not conflict with times faculty meet with prospective students.
