Transparent Assignments: Writing Down the Unwritten Rules
Transparent assignments provide students with details about the hows and whys of their assignments. Research has shown this increases both student success and retention. In this session, Sal Meyers will briefly review the research on transparent assignments and then walk participants through the elements of a transparent assignment. Participants will analyze and discuss examples of assignments that vary in their transparency. Participants will then begin the process of making one of their own assignments more transparent. If there is time, Sal will then provide participants with five additional research-based suggestions for designing good assignments. If there is not time, she will simply give participants the associated handouts for them to explore on their own later.
Faculty Development is again offering a series of workshops during Iowa Private College Week. The sessions are offered so they will not conflict with times faculty meet with prospective students.
