Fall Opera Productions: Suor Angelica by Puccini and Curlew River by Britten

Simpson College opera is pleased to announce its Fall Opera Productions, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Britten’s Curlew River: Two deeply moving pieces by two twentieth-century masters. These stunning works are unified in their ecclesiastical setting, and redemption achieved after the deaths of children, making for an unforgettable, transcendent experience in the theater.

Suor Angelica is about a woman who enters a convent after having a child out of wedlock. The baby was taken from her, and when she learns that he has died, she commits suicide to meet him in paradise. All female cast.

Curlew River is about a madwoman (tenor) who is searching for her missing child. She learns he died after being kidnapped. Stricken by grief, she prays at his grave. After hearing the voice of the deceased child she is cured of her madness. All male cast.

Musical direction will be by Bernard McDonald, stage direction by Bruce Brown, set and lighting design by Alan C. Edwards.
