The year is 1669, a troublesome time in England. Theaters have just reopened after seventeen years of Puritan suppression, and the new king has decreed that women would—for the first time—be allowed to perform onstage. Playhouse Creatures focuses on five of the most famous of these new actresses (Nell Gwyn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton) to provide a moving and often comic account of the precarious lives of Restoration actresses and the fight these women faced to be seen as legitimate actors.
