Opera at Simpson: The Beggar's Opera by John Gay

Opera at Simpson features Benjamin Britten's version of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. Featuring a large cast of characters and chorus, this performance is a fabulous showcase for dozens of our students. An 18th-century tale of the criminal London underclass, and the only "ballad opera" of its time that has survived and been adapted numerous times into the present day, Britten's setting was premiered in 1948, using the original airs, but setting them in ways that were entirely and uniquely his own, creating an essential, new, and original work.

Musical preparation and direction will be by Bernard McDonald; the stage director will be Matthew Lau; set designer Danielle Laubach; lighting design and technical direction by Kenneth Dusheck.
