Over the years, Dr. Franklin’s professional accomplishments have been recognized through a number of honors and awards, including: Alumni Recognition Award, College of Health and Human Development, the Pennsylvania State University (1989); BEACON Wellness Award, Blue Care Network of Southeastern Michigan (1991); Award of Excellence, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR, 1992); Horace Elgin Dodge Award, American Heart Association of Michigan (1998); Glenn V. Swengros Memorial Leadership Award (2002); Dodrill Award, American Heart Association (2003); Citation Award, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM; 2003); Pollock Established Investigator Award, AACVPR (2004); Award of Meritorious Achievement, American Heart Association, National Volunteer Leadership Conference (2006); Distinguished Alumnus Award, Kent State University, School of Exercise, Leisure & Sport (2008); Outstanding Medical Research Award: “Seeker of the Truth,” William Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak (2008); and Honor Award (ACSM; 2009).  In 1995, he served as a member of the Expert Panel, Cardiac Rehabilitation Guideline, convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.  From 1994-2012, Dr. Franklin served as an appointee to the Governor’s  Council on Physical  Fitness, Health and Sports (State of Michigan).  He served as President of the AACVPR in 1988 and President of the ACSM in 1999.  Dr. Franklin has also held multiple leadership positions with the American Heart Association (AHA), both at the regional and national level.  He has served as Chair, AHA Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism as well as Chair of the AHA Advocacy Committee. In February 2010, he was appointed to the national AHA Board of Trustees as well as a member of the Administrative Cabinet.  He is a past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and the American Journal of Medicine and Sports. At the present time, he holds formal editorial positions with 15 other scientific and clinical journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology, the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, Sports Medicine, the Physician and Sportsmedicine, American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, and the American Journal of Health Promotion.  Dr. Franklin has written or edited >700 publications, including 518 papers, 373 abstracts, 100 book chapters, and 26 books.  His widely cited text for the lay public, co-authored with Joseph C. Piscatella, is entitled, “Prevent, Halt and Reverse Heart Disease” (Workman Publishing, New York); his latest book is “The Healthy-Heart Handbook,” co-edited by Dr. Simon Dixon. Recently, he was named by Thomson Reuter’s among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds (Clinical Medicine) 2015. Since 1976, he has given over 1,000 invited presentations to state, national and international, medical and lay audiences.
