Jon Kara Shields is starting a group to practice Lectio Divina on campus this semester on Thursday mornings. Lectio Divina is a form of Christian contemplative meditation using passages from the Bible. It is not an intellectual or scholarly engagement with the Bible text, but one in which a group reads the text, spends time in silence together, and prays for God’s presence and illumination. It aims to be a slow, unrushed, and unanxious time spent together with others, the Bible, and the divine. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome. You do not need to make a semester-long commitment, you are welcome just to try it out. We will begin meeting on Thursday February 3rd at 8:30 am in the meditation room (lower level of Smith chapel) and plan to continue for the rest of the semester. You don’t need to bring anything, just yourself and openness to a very old practice of communal meditation.
