About this Event
Academic writing claims to adhere to the conventions of “Standard English,” a version of the language that exists mostly in theory. Many of our most cherished “rules” (never end a sentence with a preposition; do not split an infinitive) are relics of British Enlightenment-era usage and style guides. These rules also reflect social and cultural biases about the superiority of certain dialects over others. By enforcing them, we unwittingly endorse such biases. This session, led by CoryAnne Harrigan, will outline the inherent biases of certain prescriptive grammar rules and will suggest ways to balance the demands of Simpson’s academic criteria with the goals of inclusive excellence.
The same workshop will also be offered on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 3:20 pm - 4:00 pm.
This workshop will be held by Zoom: https://simpson.zoom.us/j/4531135962?from=addon
