The Vivo Chamber Players is an ensemble that was formed during the 2017-18 school year to bring together some of the string professionals who donate their time to the Simpson College Community Orchestra and the Simpson instrumental music faculty to perform chamber music. Each member of the ensemble is donating his/her time to perform music for the enjoyment of the Simpson, Indianola and surrounding communities. All Vivo performances are free and open to the public.
This performance is an exciting prospect for music faculty members John and Linda Benoit. Linda will be playing viola in the ensemble. John will be conducting the ensemble as it accompanies the silent film, The Mothering Heart, starring Lillian Gish.
John has taken photoplay music, originally written as generic incidental music to be used by theater pianists to accompany silent films, and has orchestrated it for the seventeen-member ensemble. While the film rolls, Vivo will be supplying the sound effects and the background music that expresses the drama of the film and the emotions of the actors.
As a silent film buff, John found the composition process to be extremely enjoyable. This process included choosing melodic content that reflects the action on the screen, deciding which instruments should be tasked with conveying certain leitmotifs, and syncing the music to the timing of the film.
